New Year New Opportunity for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Dancers
We’re working with Deaf Men Dancing to Create a New Dance Piece and we’re looking for professionally trained Deaf and Hard of Hearing Dancers to create ‘D-Clusivity’ with us.
Alongside Deaf Men Dancing we’ll be auditioning dancers on Friday 23 February – 10.00am – 5.00pm @Walsall Arena
Audition Requirements
Audition Date: Friday 23 February 2024 | 10am – 5.00pm
Location: Walsall Arena, WS3 1AG
Age: 18-35
Gender: Male, Female, Non-Binary
Dance style: You should have experience or training in Contemporary Dance or Ballet but we’re open to other styles e.g. Hip Hop, Jazz and Musical Theatre
- You must be deaf or hard of hearing and
- be an experienced dancers who has a strong technique
- you should work well in a team, be passionate about dance and have a creative flair
- you will be willing to learn and adapt to a new dance style.
You must be available for the 6 days of R&D between Monday 13 – Saturday 18 May, which will also take place at Walsall Arena,.
A BSL interpreter will support the 6-day R & D period, as well as the Audition Date on Friday 23 February.
Artistic Intention
You will be working with a Deaf Choreographer Mark Smith from Deaf Men Dancing. The choreographer’s style of dance is Sign Movement (A combination of sign-language and movement, blended to create a rich and diverse movement vocabulary).
He’d love for you to be open minded and willing to add input to the themes & ideas behind this new work.
About the New Work – ‘D-Clusivity’
During the Audition and the R&D Mark and the dancers will explore the creation of movement for the first part of a new professional piece of work with 4 Deaf / Hard of Hearing Dancers. The work will depict the journey and life experience of a young deaf person navigating life growing up in the UK. The piece will be set to an original musical score by composer Alex Beetschen. There will be the opportunity for 2 of the dancers to explore the movement material at a later date with Mark in a workshop with a deaf / hard of hearing community group.
Fees
Travel, accommodation, per diems will be paid for the dancers attending the 6 days of R&D, as well as a fee of £720 to each dancer attending.
