The BCDH Annual Careers in Dance Event

19th January – 9.00am – 3.30pm @ The University of Wolverhampton
Black Country Dance Hub in partnership with the University of Wolverhampton at The Performance Hub Walsall, annually attracts over 200 young people. Participants experience a busy day of dance workshops, discussions and tours to the Marketplace, which features universities, colleges and dance organisations.
The event provides young people 13 – 19 years with current information on dance training and workshop and performance opportunities. Local and national representatives from the dance sector from colleges, universities and dance organisations are available to meet and discuss courses, training, workshop and performance opportunities with young people.
For Students
This is a unique opportunity for young people interested in pursuing Dance as an examination subject or students wishing to find out about Post 16 and Post 18 Higher Education Career routes.
To meet first hand a range of people employed in the Dance Industry and to participate in a variety of workshops led by Colleges, Universities, the Centre for Advance Training, and industry Professionals
The Careers Event will focus on:
- Students aged 13 -16 years interested in Post 16 courses
- Students 16 – 18 years interested in Post 18 courses
The Programme
Each participant will follow a structured Programme for the day which will include plenty of opportunities for young people including:-
- Dance Workshops & Q&A led by Lecturers from 16+ Colleges
- Dance Workshops & Q&A led by Lecturers from18+ Universities and Training Organisations
- Dance Workshops led by Professional Artists
- Dance Workshops led by The Centre for Advanced Training (Post 16 only)
- A Dance Career Progression workshop led by Flexus Dance Collective
- A Marketplace of Local Post 16 Organisations advertising courses
- A Marketplace of Local and National Post 18 Organisations advertising courses
- An opportunity to WIN tickets for to a professional performance at Walsall Arena and Arts Centre
The cost for individual student participants is £12.00 for the day
For Organisations
This is a unique opportunity for Post 16 and Post 18 Higher Education providers and Dance Organisations to have direct access to young people interested in pursuing dance as a career or looking for training opportunities by providing Workshops / Discussion Groups and exhibiting in the Marketplace
- Each year the event grows in popularity with more organisations attending from all over the country
- 340 students attended in 2022
- All students attend the Marketplace throughout the day
Research from past events demonstrates that young people were inspired by workshops led by staff from training institutions, providing a practical insight into their courses and facilitated the opportunity for young people to ask questions in an informal setting
This year again we are expanding this provision and inviting more training providers to contribute to the event
The Careers in Dance Event is held at
The University of Wolverhampton , Gorway Campus, Walsall, WS1 3TA

Time : 9.00am – 15.15pm
Target Groups:
- Students 13-16 years aiming to or studying BTEC/GCSE
- Students 16 – 18 years studying A. Level / BTEC aiming to study Dance at Higher Education)
- Students 13 – 18 years searching for dance training opportunities
Post 16 providers are invited to:-
- Exhibit a stall in the Marketplace to advertise their courses and meet students enquiring about courses
- Deliver a 45 minute dance workshop providing young people with practical experience of what they may expect in post 16 training at your institution
- Followed by a 15 minute Q&A with young people about your organisation to focus on the courses you offer, and to provide young people with an opportunity to meet potential course staff/students
- Provide an opportunity to demonstrate progression routes to Higher Education
Post 18 Higher Education Providers, Universities and Dance Organisations are invited to :-
- Exhibit a stall in the Marketplace to advertise their courses and meet students enquiring about courses
- Deliver a 45 minute dance workshop providing young people with practical experience of what they may expect in post 18 training at your institution
- Followed by a 15minute Q&A with young people about your organisation, to focus on the courses on offer and to provide young people with an opportunity to ask questions and meet potential course staff/students
- Provide an opportunity to demonstrate progression routes into the Dance World
